We want every visit to be an enjoyable one and every child to leave with their confidence and their smile intact.

What we offer

Children's dental treatments at Berkhamsted Dental.

From a child’s very first dental visit to specialist preventive and restorative care, we offer everything your child needs to grow up with a healthy, confident smile.

Berkhamsted Dental Practice

Routine examinations

Regular dental check-ups for children to monitor development, catch any concerns early, and instil the kind of positive dental habits that last a lifetime. Available on the NHS, free for all patients under 18.

Preventive care & hygiene

Fissure sealants, fluoride applications, and professional hygiene support to protect young teeth during the years they are most vulnerable to decay. Gentle, effective, and tailored to your child’s age and needs.

Gum shields & sports mouthguards

Custom-fitted mouthguards for children who play contact or impact sports, rugby, hockey, martial arts, boxing, and more. A properly fitted gum shield offers far superior protection to an over-the-counter alternative, and can prevent injuries that might otherwise require significant dental treatment.

Orthodontic assessment

We offer orthodontic assessments for children at the practice, monitoring dental development and identifying the right time for any orthodontic intervention. Where orthodontic treatment is recommended, we will guide you through the options and the appropriate pathway forward.

Special care

We welcome children with additional needs.

We understand that for some children, and for the families who care for them, a dental appointment can feel like a significant undertaking. Children who are autistic, who have sensory sensitivities, or who live with other neurodiverse conditions may find unfamiliar environments, sounds, and experiences more challenging than others.

At Berkhamsted Dental Practice, we take that seriously, and we do everything we can to make our practice a place where every child can be seen comfortably and with dignity.

Our team has considerable experience working with children with additional needs and is committed to a flexible, patient, and entirely child-led approach. We can arrange appointments at quieter times of day to minimise noise and waiting.

Your Treatment Journey

From consultation to a confident new smile.

Berkhamsted Dental Practice

Getting to know your child

Our team will take a moment to introduce themselves gently and let your child settle in at their own pace before anything clinical begins. For children who need a little more time to feel comfortable, we are more than happy to arrange an initial visit: no treatment, no pressure, just a friendly hello.

Berkhamsted Dental Practice

A gentle examination

When your child is ready, we will carry out a careful, age-appropriate examination, checking the teeth, gums, and development, and explaining in simple, friendly terms. Children are always encouraged to ask questions, and we aim to ensure they feel involved.

Berkhamsted Dental Practice

Advice & treatment

If any treatment or preventive work is recommended, we will explain clearly what it involves and why. Nothing will proceed without your child’s comfort and your informed consent.

Berkhamsted Dental Practice

Building good habits

A key part of every visit is equipping you and your child with the knowledge and tools to maintain brilliant oral health at home. Brushing techniques, diet advice, and guidance as their teeth continue to develop: we send every family away with the information they need.

Frequently asked questions

1. Getting started

At what age should my child first see a dentist?

We recommend bringing your child to the dentist as soon as their first tooth appears, or by their first birthday, whichever comes first.

Early visits are short, relaxed, and focused entirely on getting your child comfortable in the dental environment. The sooner they begin, the more naturally they will take to regular dental care as they grow.

Is dental treatment free for children?

Yes. Under the NHS, all dental treatment for patients under the age of 18 is provided completely free of charge, including examinations, preventive care, and any clinically necessary treatment.

We offer NHS appointments for children at Berkhamsted Dental. Private paediatric care is also available for families who would like a more enhanced level of attention; please ask our team for details.

Can I stay with my child during the appointment?

Of course. You are always welcome to stay with your child throughout their appointment, particularly for younger children or those who feel more settled with a parent present. We will involve you in the conversation and ensure you are fully informed throughout.
