What can Invisalign^® fix?

Crowded teeth

Crowded teeth is a condition where you do not have enough room for your teeth to fit normally. This can cause plaque or tartar and other harmful bacteria to build up as it is harder for you to brush and floss well.

Gaps between teeth

Gaps between teeth is when there is extra space between two or more of your teeth. This can cause pockets between your teeth and gums and can cause food to get stuck making them tender and sore. This might also lead to gum disease.

Open bite

An Open bite is when your upper and lower teeth don't touch when you close your mouth. An open bite can make it hard for you to chew or difficult to bite even the most common of food like apples.

Underbite

An underbite is when you close your mouth and your lower front teeth are in front of your upper teeth. In many cases, this is actually a problem with your lower jaw being too far forward. An underbite can make it hard to chew properly and speak clearly, and it might cause your teeth to wear down more quickly.

Overbite

An overbite is when your upper front teeth overlap with your lower front teeth. Most people have at least a little overbite. When your overbite is too large, your doctor might tell you you have a deep bite. This can cause problems, from your teeth wearing down to pain in your jaw.

Crossbite

A crossbite is when you close your mouth and yet some of your upper teeth are sitting inside your lower teeth rather than on the outside. A crossbite can make your teeth wear down or chip. It can also make your gums start to recede or make little notches above your gum line. This kind of damage can lead to painful gum problems or even bone loss.

1. Am I suitable for Invisalign®?

Invisalign® is suitable for a wide range of patients, from those with mild aesthetic concerns to those with more complex alignment or bite issues. The best way to find out if it is right for you is to book a consultation with Dr Kishan Lakhani, who will assess your teeth, discuss your goals and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan.

2. Can Invisalign® work for kids and teenagers?

Yes. Invisalign® offers a dedicated treatment option for younger patients, including Invisalign® Teen. As long as the adult teeth have come through sufficiently, Invisalign can be an excellent choice. We will assess suitability at your initial consultation with Dr Kish.

3. What happens during an Invisalign® consultation?

Your consultation with Dr Kish is a relaxed, unhurried conversation about your smile goals and whether Invisalign® is the right treatment for you. During the appointment, Dr Kish will carry out a clinical examination and take a full 3D digital scan of your teeth using our iTero scanner, with no moulds or impressions required. From this scan, we can show you a ClinCheck® simulation, a digital preview of how your teeth are expected to move and what your smile could look like at the end of treatment. There is no obligation to proceed. The consultation is available for a £25 refundable deposit.

2. Treatment & day-to-day

1. How long does Invisalign® treatment take?

Treatment length varies depending on the complexity of your case and the package you choose. Invisalign® Lite typically takes between three and six months; Invisalign Moderate between six and twelve months; and Invisalign® Comprehensive between twelve and eighteen months on average, though more complex cases may take longer. Dr Kish will give you a realistic timeframe during your consultation.

2. What are attachments in Invisalign® treatment?

Attachments are small tooth-coloured dots of composite resin that are bonded to specific teeth during treatment. They act as anchor points, giving the aligners something to push against in order to achieve more precise or complex tooth movements. Not every patient needs attachments. If they are required for your treatment plan, Dr. Kish will discuss this with you at the planning stage. They are discreet, blend in with the natural colour of your teeth and are removed painlessly at the end of treatment.

3. Will Invisalign® affect my speech?

Most patients adapt very quickly, often within a day or two. You may notice a very slight change in the way certain sounds feel initially, but this typically resolves itself as you become accustomed to wearing the aligners.

4. How often do I need to wear my aligners?

For optimal results, aligners should be worn for 20 to 22 hours per day. They should only be removed for eating, drinking (anything other than plain water), brushing and flossing.

5. Can I eat and drink normally?

Yes, one of the most significant advantages of Invisalign® over fixed braces is that your aligners are fully removable. Simply take them out to eat and drink, clean your teeth and reinsert them afterwards. There are no food restrictions whatsoever.

6. Will anyone notice I am wearing aligners?

Invisalign® aligners are made from a virtually invisible SmartTrack material that sits closely against the teeth. The vast majority of patients find that friends, family and colleagues either do not notice at all or only notice when told.

7. Is Invisalign® painful?

Invisalign® is generally much more comfortable than fixed braces. When you move to a new set of aligners, you may experience mild pressure or sensitivity for the first day or two as your teeth begin to shift; this is entirely normal and is a sign that the treatment is working. Most patients describe it as minor and entirely manageable.

8. How do I take care of my aligners?

Rinse your aligners in lukewarm water every time you remove them and clean them gently with a soft toothbrush. Avoid hot water, as this can warp the plastic. Always brush and floss before reinserting them and store them in their case whenever they are out of your mouth.

3. Aftercare & retainers

1. What happens after my treatment is complete?

At the end of your treatment, we will provide you with Essix retainers, discreet, removable retainers worn at night, to maintain your results long-term. Retention is an important and long-lasting part of any orthodontic outcome, and it is included in all Berkhamsted Dental Invisalign® packages.

2. What if I have had braces or other types of dental work?

Previous orthodontic treatment or existing restorations such as crowns, veneers or bridges do not necessarily rule out Invisalign®. Dr Kish will carry out a thorough clinical assessment to determine the best approach for your smile. In many cases, Invisalign® can be used successfully alongside existing dental work.

3. What if I have a big occasion coming up?

Now is the perfect time to start. Whether you have a wedding, a milestone birthday or a graduation on the horizon, Invisalign® works with your timeline. Begin your treatment today and arrive at your occasion with the smile you have always wanted.

4. What type of retainer should I use?

After completing Invisalign® treatment, wearing a retainer is essential to keep your teeth in their new position. The two main options are Essix retainers (clear, removable trays similar to your aligners) and Vivera retainers (Invisalign®’s own premium retainer, made from a more durable proprietary material).

At Berkhamsted Dental Practice, every completed Invisalign® treatment includes a free set of Essix retainers as standard. Dr Kish will advise on the best long-term retention approach at your end-of-treatment appointment.

5. What is the difference between Essix and Vivera retainers?

Both are clear, removable retainers that fit over your teeth. Essix retainers are the standard option, made from a clear thermoplastic material.

Vivera retainers are manufactured by Invisalign® using the same proprietary SmartTrack® material as your aligners, making them approximately 30% more durable.

Vivera retainers are supplied in sets of four pairs, giving you built-in replacements. Both are effective at maintaining your results, and Dr Kish will help you choose the right option for your lifestyle.

6. How much do Essix and Vivera retainers cost?

A free set of Essix retainers is included with every Invisalign® treatment package at Berkhamsted Dental Practice. Vivera retainers are available as a premium upgrade. For specific prices for you, ask the team at your next visit.

7. How long do I wear retainers once treatment is completed?

In the months immediately following treatment, most patients wear their retainer full-time (20 to 22 hours a day), removing it only to eat and clean their teeth. After this initial period, Dr Kish will typically recommend night-time wear only.

In most cases, some level of retainer wear is advised indefinitely, as teeth can gradually drift if a retainer is not used consistently over the long term.

8. What happens if my aligners are damaged or lost?

If an aligner is lost or damaged, contact us as soon as possible. Depending on where you are in your treatment, we will advise whether to move on to the next aligner in the sequence or whether a replacement needs to be ordered.

Replacements can be arranged but may incur an additional charge. To avoid this, always store your aligners in their protective case when they are out of your mouth.

9. Can food residue stain my aligners if I put them back in without cleaning my teeth first?

Yes. It is important to brush and floss before reinserting your aligners. If food particles or sugary residue remain in contact with your teeth while aligners are in place, it can cause staining to both the aligners and your teeth and significantly increase the risk of tooth decay.

Developing a clean-before-you-reinsert habit early in treatment makes a real difference to both your results and your oral health.

10. Can I chew gum whilst wearing my aligners?

No. Chewing gum will stick to your aligners and may distort their shape, affecting how well they fit and how effectively they move your teeth. Always remove your aligners before chewing gum.

11. Will smoking stain my aligners?

Yes. Smoking whilst wearing aligners will cause them to yellow and discolour noticeably and the staining can be difficult to remove. We recommend removing your aligners before smoking and cleaning your teeth before reinserting them. Bear in mind that discoloured aligners are clearly visible when you smile, which rather defeats the purpose of a discreet treatment.

1. How long has Invisalign® been around?

Invisalign® was founded in 1997 by two Stanford University graduates, Zia Chishti and Kelsey Wirth, and the treatment became commercially available in 1999. Since then, it has been used to treat over 17 million patients worldwide. The technology has advanced significantly, with innovations including SmartTrack® aligner material, ClinCheck® 3D treatment planning software and the iTero® digital scanner, making treatment more precise, comfortable and predictable than ever.

2. How does Invisalign® benefit me in the long term?

Beyond the cosmetic result of a straighter smile, correcting the alignment of your teeth carries significant long-term health benefits. Straighter teeth are considerably easier to clean, reducing the build-up of plaque in hard-to-reach areas and lowering your risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
