A dental crown is one of the most effective and time-tested ways to restore a tooth that has been damaged, weakened, or significantly decayed. A crown is a custom-made cap that fits over an existing tooth, encasing it completely from the gum line upward, restoring it to its natural shape, size, and function. The result is a restoration that looks, feels, and performs like a natural tooth, and in most cases will be virtually indistinguishable from the teeth around it.

Modern crowns are made from high-quality materials including porcelain, ceramic, and zirconia, each chosen for their durability, their tooth-like appearance, and their ability to blend naturally with the surrounding smile. The material recommended for your crown will depend on its position in the mouth, the forces it needs to withstand and your aesthetic goals. Your dentist will guide you through the options clearly at your consultation.

about treatment

When do you need a crown?

A crown is recommended when a tooth needs structural protection or rebuilding that a filling alone cannot reliably provide. Your dentist will always recommend the most conservative approach that achieves the result you need.

Frequently asked questions

1. About the treatment

Can a crown look completely natural?

Yes. Modern porcelain and zirconia crowns are extremely lifelike. They are shade-matched to your surrounding teeth and designed to reflect light in the same way as natural enamel. Patients frequently tell us that friends and family cannot tell the difference.

What is the difference between a crown and a veneer?

A crown covers the entire tooth from the gum line upward and is used primarily where a tooth is structurally compromised. A veneer covers only the front surface of a tooth and is used primarily for cosmetic improvement of teeth that are otherwise healthy. Your dentist will always recommend the most conservative option that achieves the result you need.

How long does a crown last?

With good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, a well-made crown can last fifteen years or more, and in many cases considerably longer. The longevity of your crown depends on the material, your bite, and how well it is maintained. Your dentist will advise on what to expect for your specific restoration at your consultation.

Is having a crown fitted painful?

The preparation appointment is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should experience no pain during the procedure. Some mild sensitivity or tenderness in the days following preparation is normal and usually settles quickly. The fitting appointment is typically very straightforward and comfortable.
