A dental implant is the closest thing modern dentistry has to a natural tooth. A small titanium post is placed directly into the jawbone, where it integrates with the bone over time to create a stable, long-lasting foundation. Once healed, a custom-crafted crown is fitted on top, indistinguishable in appearance and function from the teeth around it. The result is a tooth that looks, feels and works exactly as it should.

At Berkhamsted Dental Practice, dental implant treatment is led by Dr Nikhil Patel, a clinician who has dedicated much of his career to this discipline. From carefully planned single-tooth restorations to complex full-arch cases, immediate implant placements and bone grafting procedures, Nik brings a level of precision, experience and care that patients recognise from the very first consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Am I suitable for dental implants?

Most adults in good general health are suitable for dental implants, provided they have sufficient bone density in the jaw. If bone has been lost due to tooth extraction or gum disease, bone grafting may be required beforehand. Dr Nikhil will assess this thoroughly during your consultation and CBCT scan.

Can I have implants if I smoke?

Smoking can affect the success of dental implant treatment, as it impairs healing and increases the risk of infection and implant failure. We would always recommend reducing or stopping smoking before and after treatment. Dr Nikhil will discuss the implications with you honestly during your consultation.

Can I have implants if I have diabetes or another medical condition?

Many patients with diabetes and other medical conditions are suitable for dental implants, provided the condition is well managed. Certain medications and health factors can affect healing, so it is important to disclose your full medical history at your consultation. Dr Nikhil will assess your suitability carefully and thoroughly.

Am I too old (or too young) for dental implants?

There is no upper age limit for dental implants, and many patients in their 70s, 80s, and beyond benefit significantly from the treatment. For younger patients, implants are generally not placed until the jawbone has finished developing, typically in the late teens or early twenties. Dr Nikhil will confirm your suitability at consultation.

What is the difference between a dental implant and a bridge or denture?

A dental implant replaces the tooth root as well as the visible crown, providing a stable, permanent foundation that preserves the jawbone and does not rely on adjacent teeth for support. A bridge requires the healthy teeth on either side to be prepared, while a denture is removable and may feel less secure over time. Implants are widely regarded as the gold standard long-term solution.

How long does the full treatment take?

From consultation to final crown fitting, the typical implant journey takes between four and nine months. This includes the healing period after implant placement, typically three to six months, during which the implant fuses with the jawbone. Complex cases requiring bone grafting may take a little longer. Dr Nik will give you a clear timeline at your consultation.
